Botswana signs new diamond sales deal with De Beers

Botswana and mining firm De Beers have introduced a brand new diamond gross sales deal. 

The brand new deal, concluded on Friday, offers Botswana an even bigger share of tough stones from their three way partnership.

Debswana, a three way partnership between Anglo American unit De Beers and Botswana’s authorities, sells 75% of its output to De Beers, with the stability taken up by state-owned Okavango Diamond Co.

The brand new settlement covers a 10-year gross sales deal for Debswana tough diamond manufacturing via to 2033 and 25-year Debswana mining licences.

Within the run-up to Friday’s deal, Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi, who is predicted to hunt re-election subsequent yr, had pushed De Beers for an even bigger share of Debswana’s output.

In March, Botswana introduced it will take a 24% stake in Belgian gem processing agency HB Antwerp in a transfer seen as designed to loosen De Beers‘ grip on the nation’s gems.

Botswana provides 70% of De Beers’ tough diamonds.
