La Vuelta 2022: ‘No one could touch him’ – Reaction to ‘phenomenal’ Sam Bennett’s sprint triumph in Utrecht

Sam Bennett’s “phenomenal sprint victory on Stage 2 La Vuelta a Espana Bora-Hansgrohe” showed that “no one can touch him”, the Breakaway team stated on their reaction show.

Bennett won an impressive victory in a thrilling sprint before a packed crowd in Utrecht. Many had predicted that Tim Merlier (Alpecin Deceuninck), who was in great form, would win in the final sprint. But it was Bennett who won the race in a dramatic sprint. The 31-year-old Irishman took a very memorable victory.

Trek-Segafredo’s Mads Petersen took second place, while Merlier was third. This was after a wild day of racing. Bennett’s incredible victory was highlighted on The Breakaway.

Dan Lloyd stated, “It’s phenomenal and I think it is all incredibly happy for him.”

“You look back at Bora Hansgrohe’s season and ask yourself, “When is he going win big races again?”

“He would have been asking himself questions, and he just needed a good run, preferably on sprint stage one of the race, because after that, the floodgates could well open.

“That is all you need to be a sprinter. You do experience droughts, but a lot of it’s mental than physical. He must have been in control of his own thoughts.

“So now that the sprint is over and that the other riders couldn’t pass him, he showed that he was stronger than the rest of the sprinters.

“Hats off!” I can only imagine that he could win one, two, or three more sprint wins in this Vuelta.

Adam Blythe agreed, “Yes, absolutely, it will be an enormous boost.

“I think that’s the Sam Bennett I have seen. He drag-raced Mads Petersen to the finish line, not because he was in the right spot. He was just quicker than him.

“That is probably the best sprint Sam has ever done in terms of power.

“He was looking to get a little kick towards the finish, but he outsprinted everyone and drag-raced them to their line. He was the best.

Bennett was delighted with his comeback win, which showed that he still has the ability to shine in major sprints.

Bennett was delighted with Stage 2’s sprint victory.

Bennett said that “Danny did not deliver me; he launched” in his post-race interview.

“He brought him up with speed, then he was almost ready for me jump, but I waited a while and I didn’t know if I’d let my speed drop too far. I was afraid I wouldn’t get back to the top of the speed.

“It’s nice. I knew I’d do it [win a stage at a Grand Tour]Again, it was a matter of finding the right legs. “What I’m most happy about is that I have won at least one stage in every Grand Tour since 2018. That’s what I love.”
