Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool ‘should get the points’ if Man Utd fan protest postpones match

Liverpool “should get points” if the match at Old Trafford against Manchester United on Monday is delayed due to planned protests by United supporters.

The exact same fixture was cancelled last season after protests from Old Trafford’s Glazer family, who were seeking to join the European Super League. The rescheduled fixture was won by Liverpool 4-2.

After a disappointing start to the season, United fans are expected to demonstrate at Old Trafford against Glazer’s ownership of Manchester United.

Fans view the Glazer family, which includes Joel Glazer and brothers Avram Glazer, as owners who are willing to watch the club decline.

United, who are currently bottom of the Premier League table following their defeat to Brentford and Brighton, will hope to turn their fortunes around against Liverpool. Klopp however says that if the match has been postponed, his team should still win.

“I really hope it will not happen but if it does happen I think we should get the points. We have nothing to do. If the fans want the game to not happen, we can’t just rearrange it again and fit it somewhere else in an extremely busy season.

“I don’t think it will and I really hope this won’t happen – I have no idea what could happen and I don’t think about it. We hear that we are fine. So we go out and play the game, hoping to win, and then go home. But in a situation like this always the other team should get the points because they have nothing to do with it and they have prepared for it.”

Greater Manchester Police has no plans to increase security for the match at this time.

A United supporters’ group ‘The 1958’, who describe themselves as an “underground group of reds intent on upholding the values of Manchester United, its culture and traditions” have led the plans to protest on Monday, with demonstrations looking to start at 7pm, one hour before kick-off.

“We have our voices and we will not be silenced by attempts from our owners and the club to quash the feelings and passion of the common fan,” reads a statement from The 1958.

“They are in the wrong, they are ruining the history, traditions and culture of our great club and the 58 will not standby and watch our club rot away any longer.

“The 1958 will always consider what’s in the best interest of our fanbase and club. Only restoring rightful and proper ownership is important. To put all our efforts into football success and upholding the traditions and standards of this great club. We will not conform to the Glazers or have our backsides pampered by them.

“Unite with us and stand with us on Monday to demonstrate this is not acceptable any longer. We expect massive numbers to turnout.”
