Monsoon flooding sweeps away hiker at Zion National Park

SPRINGDALE, Utah – Search and rescue teams continue to scour Zion National Park for at least one missing hiker after monsoon rains caused flash flooding in southern Utah.

According to park rangers, they received initial reports Friday afternoon at 2:15 p.m. of hikers in need of rescue after being swept off their feet. They were able to respond quickly to the group.

A park spokesperson stated that more than 20 park rangers were on the scene along with members of the rescue team to search the Virgin River in case any other visitors became lost.

Authorities have identified the missing woman as Jetal Agnihotri, a Tucson, Arizona resident.

Despite all efforts to find the hiker, no trace has been found.

“Park rangers and other members of the Zion Search and Rescue Team responded quickly to this event, and we are continuing our efforts,” Jeff Bradybaugh, Zion National Park superintendent said in statement. “I want to express the park’s appreciation for the ongoing support we’ve received from the National Weather Service, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, and Hurricane Valley Fire District as we continue search and rescue operations.”

As rainfall runoff enters waterways, rivers will continue to rise.

Flooding and ongoing rescue efforts have caused some parts of the park to be closed.

According to FOX Forecast Centre, rivers will continue increasing during the workweek due to rainfall runoff entering waterways.
