A coroner’s report into the 2017 demise of a person killed by Montreal police says arresting officers used pointless pressure and lacked correct coaching in de-escalation ways.
Coroner Luc Malouin says in his report launched Friday on the demise of Koray Kevin Celik that police had been unprepared once they arrived at his dwelling on March 6, 2017, within the Montreal neighbourhood of Île-Bizard.
His mother and father known as police as a result of they wished to stop Celik, 28, from driving a automobile whereas intoxicated.
Responding officers tried to subdue Celik with pressure, and his mother and father stated they witnessed police repeatedly beat their son with their ft and knees earlier than the unarmed man stopped respiratory.
Malouin says the pressure utilized by police was pointless and that none of them had acquired coaching in de-escalation ways or in methods to take care of individuals in disaster.
The coroner says the Metropolis of Montreal since 2019 requires its officers to obtain de-escalation coaching.
