Wildfires in Algeria: farmers in the north lose everything

After numerous forest fires that ravaged large areas of the north and east, nearly 40 people were killed this week, Algerian farmers are now inspecting their lands.Authorities claimed that most wildfires were under control on Friday.

Um El-Kheir and her neighbors are shocked to learn that all their belongings were destroyed in the fires. “All the trees are gone, all the lemon trees and all their fruits were destroyed. Colonel Boughlef, Director General of Civil Protection, stated that more than 1,000 families were evacuated from the affected areas since Wednesday.

Over 1.700 firefighters were called to help with 70 fires on Wednesday and Thursday. However, criticisms arose as many pointed out the lack of resources in the country. They do not have gold Firefighting Aircrafts. Algeria is seeing more fires as a result of heat waves and droughts linked to climate changes.
