Chad: opening of the “national dialogue” conference in N’Djamena

The National Dialogue conference of Chad began in N’Djamena on Saturday.The head of the country’s ruling junta General Mahamat IIdriss Deb called it a “decisive time for the nation” during the opening ceremony.

Over 1,400 representatives from the government, civil society, and opposition parties and organizations will have the opportunity to discuss peace, reform, and a new constitution in three weeks.

These talks are, above all, meant to open the way for elections promised prior to the end of OctobeMahamat Idriss, r. Mahamat Deby, who assumed power in April 2021 after the death his father, vowed to organize free and democratic elections at end of his 18-month transition.

This event has been delayed a few times. It was possible after the signing on August 8 of a deal by the junta with around 40 groups. A deal two of the biggest rebel groups rejected among which the FACT who killed former president and father of the actual president, Idriss Déby.
