Man Dies by Suicide After Ramming Car Into Barricade Near U.S. Capitol

According to authorities, a man drove his car into the barricade at the U.S. Capitol building on Sunday morning. He then died from a self inflicted gunshot wound.

According to the U.S. Capitol Police, Richard A. York III was the man who exited his car after it crashed at East Capitol Street and Second Streets shortly after 4 a.m. It caught fire, according to a statement. As officers approached him, he fired several shots into air and then shot himself.

According to the statement, officers did not fire back. No one was injured. Although Mr. York, 29, is from Delaware, the motive behind his actions was not clear as of Sunday afternoon.

“At this time, it does not appear the man was targeting any members of Congress, who are on recess,” the statement said.
