Somalia: Parliament approves cabinet as mortar fire hits Mogadishu

In Somalia, Sunday, a majority of members of parliament approved the country’s appointed cabinet by a show of hands.

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre’s 75-member government was established moments after mortar shells were fired on residential areas near Mogadishu.

The quorum was 237 MPs. Seven MPs refused to vote, one MP abstained, and some 229 MPs supported the approval of the new cabinet ministers. It is therefore approved“, the speaker of the house,  Adan Mohamed Nuur Madobe, said.

Even if there is no immediate claim of responsibility, security issues will continue to be a top priority for the newly appointed cabinet.

The cabinet, which includes Mukhtar Robow (pictured here on the right), is also known as Abu Mansur. He is sworn into office as the Religious affairs minister.

Allah be with me. I am happy that my government was approved by the House of Commons.“,  PM Hamza Abdi Barre told.

Al-Shabaab rebels have been fighting a bloody war for the government and people of Somalia for 15 year. The new cabinet will also prioritize a looming food shortage.

Prior to the Russia/Ukraine conflict, Somalia had imported 90% its wheat from both Russia-Ukraine. Mogadishu’s food supplies have been dwindling due to the loss of international donors.

Security: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud stated that ending violent insurgency requires more than a military approach.
