Nigeria joins the world to commemorate Humanitarian Day

On Thursday, Nigeria marked the world humanitarian day. President Buhari paid a maiden trip to the Maiduguri, a jihadist-hit state in Borno.

His visit was to pay respect and remember aid workers who were killed in the line-of-duty. He urges the sector’s attention to “emerging problems”, including “the growing number of widows and orphans.”

“World Humanitarian Day is commemorated every year on the 19th of August to pay tribute to humanitarian workers killed and injured in the course of their work, to honour all the aid and health workers who continue despite the odds to provide life-saving support and protection to people most in need,” said Babagana Umara Zulum, the Governor of Borno state.

Sadiya Farouq (the country’s Humanitarian Minister) stated that since 2016, 35 aid workers died, 72 were wounded, and 28 were kidnapped.

According to the UN, jihadist violence has displaced more than two million people from their northeastern homes since 2009, displacing them with over 40,000 victims.

Boko Haram and its rival ISWAP are well-known for kidnapping children, women, and aid workers.

They are involved in a conflict that has raged for 12 years and has displaced more than two million people.
