Best cheap Kindle deals August 2022

There are many options available when it comes down to the best device to read your ebooks on. While you can buy a tablet or your smartphone, these devices can be used for many things such as surfing the internet or tweeting. E-readers, although they are niche, can be used to store all your books in an online library.

Amazon, one of many pioneers in e-reader technology, has dominated this space for years. Its Kindle lineup includes several models, each with its own pros and cons.

Below, we’ve listed each model currently available. Sometimes, there isn’t a deal for one or any of the products — which is often the case following shopping events like Prime Day — but we’ve mentioned the most recent sale price in those instances. You should also remember that Amazon offers 20% off select Kindles if you trade in your device. There are still ways to save money if none are available.

The 10th-gen Kindle is Amazon’s most affordable e-reader, and as such, it usually retails for $89.99. The base Kindle was launched in 2019 and includes a frontlight, 8GB of storage, as well as ad support. The latest model has a slightly higher contrast than previous models, despite having the same resolution of 167ppi as its predecessors.

The 10th-gen Kindle starts at $89.99 with ads. However, we recently saw it on sale for $44.99 during Prime Day. These sales have ended but the ad-supported model in white is still available for $59.99 on Amazon. The same applies to the ad-free model in white, which can be purchased on Amazon for $79.99 ($30).

The discount price is $91.97 ($48 off), or $144.97 ($15 Off) for the ad-supported ereader. Note, however, that if you buy either Kindle model at Amazon, you’ll also receive three months of Kindle Unlimited at no additional cost.

Kindle Essentials Bundle (2019)

Amazon’s apt-titled Kindle Essentials Bundle includes the ad-supported base Kindle, as well as a power adapter and either a red, black, blue, or white cover.

In 2019, Oasis and the entry-level Kindle models were not only refreshed. Amazon also launched the Kindle Kids, which includes a few accessories and offers age-appropriate content to younger readers who prefer digital books. It costs $109.99 ($20 more that the base Kindle at the standard MSRP).

The Kindle Kids Edition includes the following four items: a case, the device, a case and a two year extended replacement guarantee (in event of device failure) along with one year of Amazon Kids Plus. The Kindle Kids Edition’s biggest selling point is its ability to allow parents to give their children access digital libraries of kid-friendly literature. On the deals front, we recently saw the Kindle Kids drop to a mere $49.99 on Amazon as part of the retailer’s two-day Prime Day promotion. Amazon has discontinued the sale of this kid-friendly device for that price. However, it is still available on Amazon at $59.99.

Amazon’s latest Kindle Paperwhite is its 11th-gen model, which comes with USB-C support, longer battery life, and a larger, 6.8-inch display. Given the e-reader launched just last year, however, we haven’t seen a ton of steep discounts yet. You can still purchase the last-gen model at a lower price than the retail price.

The 2021 Kindle Paperwhite is available in three configurations: an 8GB model that has ads for $139.99; an 8GB model that does not have ads for $159.99; and a 32GB, adless Signature Edition for $189.99. The latter is identical in design to the standard Paperwhite but includes Qi wireless charging, a sensor that adjusts the backlight automatically when necessary, and an ad-free Signature Edition for $189.99. Amazon also launched a Kindle Paperwhite Kids Edition, priced at $159.99. It comes with a kid friendly cover, a 2-year extended replacement warranty, and a year subscription to Amazon Kids Plus. This is similar to the Kindle Kids. All 2021 models have a waterproof design and Audible support.

Recently, the price of the ad-supported Paperwhite dropped to $94.99 for Amazon Prime members. Although it’s currently not available at the aforementioned sale price, it is on sale for $30 off at Amazon and Best Buy right now, where you can pick it up starting at $109.99. If you buy the e-reader at Amazon, however, you’ll also receive three months of Kindle Unlimited at no additional cost.

Kindle Paperwhite (2021)

Amazon’s new Kindle Paperwhite has a 6.8-inch, E Ink display with adjustable color temperature for nighttime reading. It also boasts a faster processor, additional battery life, IPX8 waterproofing, and — finally — a USB-C port.

Amazon also offers the 2021 Paperwhite as part of a bundle that includes a power adapter and your choice of a fabric cover for $156.97 (with delayed shipping), a leather cover for $149.97, or a “cork” cover for $152.97, all three of which are between $50 and $57 off.

As for the 32GB, ad-free Signature Edition, it’s on sale at Amazon and Best Buy right now for $149.99, nearly matching the e-reader’s best price to date. Amazon currently sells it with a cork cover, wireless charging dock, and a wireless charger dock for $202.97 ($67).

The premium Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition has the same design and performance of the base model but has more storage and Qi wireless charging.

Unfortunately, if you’re looking for the Kindle Paperwhite Kids Edition, it’s only available at Best Buy and Amazon right now for $159.99, its standard retail price.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Kids (2021).

Amazon’s kid-friendly Paperwhite is the same as the new base model, but it’s ad-free and comes with the added benefits of a two-year hardware protection plan, one year of Amazon Kids Plus, and a choice of three kid-friendly covers.

While there currently are no significant deals happening on the 2021 Kindle Paperwhite — save for the slight break on the various bundles — retailers like Amazon and Best Buy often lower the price of the last-gen model during major shopping holidays and bigger sales events, including Black Friday and Amazon Prime Day.

Sadly, despite having been on sale for as low as $69.99 in the run-up to Prime Day, the 2018 e-reader is only available right now in refurbished configuration at Amazon starting at $109.99 — the same price the 2021 model is currently going for at multiple retailers.

The Kindle Oasis starts at $250 and is the most expensive. You can choose from 8GB or 32GB storage options. As with the other models you can also get it without ads or without them.

The 2019 Kindle Oasis is very similar to the old model. It still has its waterproof, 7-inch display with 300ppi E Ink and supports Audible audiobooks via Bluetooth. It can also adjust the color temperature to yellow, which makes it easier to read at night, unlike previous models.

In the past, we’ve seen the 8GB Kindle Oasis drop to as low as $174.99, which remains the lowest price for the standalone configuration to date. The 8GB, ad supported Oasis is still available at Amazon and Best Buy for $199.99 ($50). Amazon offers the model for $219.99 ($50 off), which includes three months of Kindle Unlimited. If you need more storage, the 32GB model is also available on Amazon for full price with ads for $279.99, or $299.99 with no ads.

If you’re looking for a package, the Kindle Oasis Essentials Bundle is also currently on sale in select configurations at Amazon. You can choose from the 8GB, ad supported configuration starting at $229.97 ($80) or the 32GB variant starting as low as $309.97 ($30). Both come with a power adapter, and either a fabric cover or a leather cover.

Kindle Oasis (8GB)

Amazon’s premium e-reader now includes a warmer display, making it easier to read at night or in various lighting conditions. It’s also IPX8 waterproof, like the Paperwhite.
