Mets rising as MLB playoffs threat after beating Braves

Three-hundred-and-sixty-five days ago, the Mets were dead in the water.

The Mets had a commanding lead in the NL East in July, but it was gone in a matter of weeks. The Mets led by five games into August 1. They proceeded to lose seven of eight games, including getting swept in Philadelphia to drop out of first place — for good.

Jacob deGrom wouldn’t pitch the remainder of the season. The Mets quickly fell below.500 and finished 11.5 games behind Braves. This triggered a reckoning that saw Luis Rojas fired and Buck Showalter hired. Billy Eppler was brought in as GM to make sure history would not repeat.

It turns out that one year really does make all the differences.
