‘I can retire now’ – Adam Peaty in humorous mood after winning 50m breaststroke gold at Commonwealth Games
Adam Peaty joked that now he can retire because he won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 50m breaststroke for the first time.
The three-time Olympic gold medallist powered his way to victory in a blistering time of 26.76 followed by Australia’s Sam Williamson and Scotland’s Ross Murdoch.

He finished second in the 50m breaststroke in 27.03 seconds. This was two one-hundredths slower than William’s time of 27.01 on Monday.
After finishing second in 2018 and 2014, the 50m breaststroke Commonwealth Games gold was the only gold missing from his collection, and he couldn’t hide his emotion when he finally topped the podium.
“This morning, I had two choices. I could either fight or not fight. Everyone who knows me, knows I fight,” he told BBC Sport.
“That means so much to my because I have lost my spark towards beginning of the week over the past five years and now I have it back.
“There were many emotions yesterday. However, a lot more people have understood that I reached the bottom yesterday. To be able to keep up with the crowd in the present is the result.
“That was the only one that I haven’t won in my entire career, the Commonwealth 50m, and I can retire now. I don’t care about stats, tonight was all about racing and who would get on the wall first.
“No one can go up to the pace I go at, but without training it goes nowhere.” I am looking forward having a winter, and to resetting my training.
“I am so glad that I lost earlier in the week because these victories feel so much more alive, and so much better.”
