Kenya’s main presidential candidates hold final rallies ahead of election

The Kenyan presidential candidates are seen making the final push for votes in advance of August 9th.

At the Nyayo National Stadium, Nairobi’s capital, where there are 30,000 people, William Ruto, Deputy President and a rags to riches businessman, addressed the crowd. He called himself the antithesis of the status-quo and the great hope that Kenyans have for the future.

He was once expected as President Uhuru Kenyatta’s successor. But he lost ground when Kenyatta — who is unable again to run – aligned his self with longtime rival Odinga.

Raila Odinga was also in Nairobi, where she was wooing voters at the Kasarani Stadium with its 60,000-seat capacity.

Kenyatta’s endorsement for Odinga has allowed him access to the powerful election machinery of the ruling Jubilee party.

He is contesting the election five times, including the 2007 vote which was followed violently by over a thousand deaths.

Odinga is the son of independent Kenya’s first vice-president, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
